Overview Sporting Achievements
It was a busy mid-year break for many Maritzburg College boys who participated in sporting events over the June July holidays, at provincial and national levels.
Rugby
Three College 1st XV players, P Kubheka, A Botha and J Jansen, were selected for the Sharks U18 Craven Week team, that won two interprovincial matches and lost one.

Four College boys were selected for the Sharks U17 Academy team; C Cherayi, I Mlotshwa, W Vyambwera and L-R Sinkfontein. The Sharks U17 team secured one win, one loss and one draw.

One College player, A Ngubane, was selected for the U17 Rhino week team that won one match, drew one and lost one.

College had three players in the Sharks U16 Grant Khomo side that won two matches and lost one; T Boshoff, O Kosani and R Stanton.

The KZN U15 Rhino week team, which featured two College boys; S Jansen and M Mogale, won all three of their matches.

College is especially proud to have two boys selected for the SA Schools U18 rugby side, P Kubheka and A Botha, that played against the SA Schools A-team, winning 38-22.
Hockey
Maritzburg College hockey was represented by 42 boys and eight staff spanning nine teams and seven tournaments in three different provinces over the course of the June July school holidays. The various tournaments formed national interprovincial A and B sections as well as regional tournaments.
Under 18
The U18A team played in the A section of IPT in Bloemfontein represented by seven College boys; N Holmes, J Konigkramer, D Jackson, K Jenkins, B Dlamini, U Dlamini, I Mosupye, who performed admirably finishing 5th overall. Noticeably B Dlamini finished on the first page of the high scorers list. B Dlamini and K Jenkins were selected in the South African U18B squad.
The U18B team played in the B section of IPT after being relegated in the 2023 competition. The team represented by two College boys, A Mthalane, T Fulton, performed well and finished 5th overall.
The U18C team played in the regional tournament held at Michaelhouse and represented by four College boys; G Askew, B Thornton-Dibb, SJ Mkhize, L Fitz. The team played well and finished a respectable 3rd overall.
Under 16
The U16A team played in the A section of IPT in Bloemfontein represented by nine College boys; E Fabre, C Francis, R Schirge, S Sithembu, A Lembethe, S Mchunu, M Smith, L Sishi, G Motswadire, and five staff The team played well and finished top of their pool being the only team in the whole competition to win all five games. They lost the semifinals but won their final playoff game against Coastals to finish 3rd overall. S Sithembu finished on the first page of the high scorers list. S Sithembu and C Francis were both selected for the South African U16A squad, while E Fabre, M Smith and A Lembethe were selected for the South African U16B squad. In total six players were selected for national representation of which five were College boys.
The 16B team also played in A section of IPT and were represented by five College boys; H Hackland, C Lecourt-De Billot, V Ndlovu, L Shelembe, K Mngwengwe. Playing against A teams in their pool games they drew and narrowly lost games, but won their first playoff game and finished in 9th place overall in the A section.
The U16C team played in a regional tournament at Michaelhouse with three College boys in the side; S Schirge, S Zondi, R Wilson. They played well and finished 4th overall.
Under 14
The U14A team played in the A section of IPT held at KES in Johannesburg and were represented by three College boys; R Fitz, T Addisson, J Smith. The boys played well and grew immensely through the course of the tournament. The team finished in 5th position overall.
The U14B and C teams played in a regional tournament and represented by eight College boys and three staff held at Kearsney and finished 3rd and 8th respectively. The B team featuring J Greaves, J Lusso, J Wilson, N Jakatyana, narrowly lost out on playing in the final. The C team also had four College boys in the side; E Gwala, W Johnson, B Nkosi, C Baxter. Both teams played well, and all College boys proved the standard of College hockey is by far the best in the Inland set up.
Canoeing
Three College boys competed in the SA Canoe Marathon Championships. Congratulations to K Vogt who won the K1 U18 race, qualifying for the SA team to compete at the World Championships in Croatia in September. Jayden JvRensburg finished in 16th position. Keegan also won the K1 U16 race while K Clarke finished 5th in the U14 race.
In the K2 U18 event, Jayden and his partner (G Palframen) took 3rd place and were 4th overall, followed by Keegan and his partner (B Cochrane ) in 4th and 6th places overall. K Clarke and his partner, (J Cole) won the U14 K2 race.
Keegan continued his excellent form taking part in the senior K2 race with his partner (Jack de Swart) finishing 7th and 1st U23.
College’s canoeists also competed in several surfski events.

Congratulations to Matthew van Heerden who competed in the Junior and U23 Slalom and Kayak Cross World Championships in Slovakia from 3-7 July. In the Slalom Men’s Kayak Junior event, Matthew finished in 65th, and in the Kayak Cross Men’s Kayak Junior category he finished 79th. This was his first time on the international circuit and a great chance to learn what the international world of racing is all about!
Soccer
College’s 1st XI soccer team took part in the Kloof tournament over the June holidays. They won all four of the pool matches and beat Glenwood in the quarter-final, before losing to Louis Botha in the semi-final, and eventually finishing in 4th position overall.

Quarter-final: College vs Glenwood drew 2-2, won 3-2 on penalties.
Semi-final: College vs Louis Botha drew 2-2; lost 4-3 on penalties.
Congratulations to M Qasha and B Middleton who were selected for the team of the tournament.
Squash
Three College squash players took part in the U19 IPPT in Cape Town over the holidays.
The KZN U19A team (which included W Galliers) finished 3rd, while the KZN U19B (which included T Kufal and V Premchund) finished 2nd overall, with V Premchund winning all of his matches.
Debating and Public Speaking
College debaters selected for provincials attended the After Freedom tournament at Westville Girls’ High campus on 14 – 16 June 2024.
