Message for our Mothers

This is a speech given by head prefect, Codi Robinson at the PCB Ladies lunch on 2 August and to the school at assembly on 5 August 2024.

Mother, Umama, Ma, mama, and mom. We love you.

Gooday ladies and gentlemen. With it being women’s month, I have decided to do my speech on a lady we all know and love, our moms.

She is the one person we can always rely on. Without her you would not be here, without her I would not be here expressing how important they are to us. They are the pillars of our families, the glue that holds us together, the jubilant ray of sunshine in the darkness. They nurture us, support us, and shape us into the people we are today.

from the moment we take our first breath, they are there for us. Showing unwavering unconditional love, care, and devotion. They are our first love, our first touch, our first smell, our first sight in the first voice we ever hear. They are all heroes, our role models, they show us right from wrong and teach us how to live our lives.

Mothers come in many forms, whether it be biological, adoptive, stepmothers, or mother figures, but no matter what form they take their impact is immeasurable. They are and will always be a mom.

They wipe our tears away when we cry, then encourage us to chase our dreams and most importantly feed us when we are hungry. Their selfless nature knows no bounds. They work tirelessly behind the scenes sacrificing their own needs and desires for our benefit. They are the very definition of strength, resilience, and determination.

I would just like to thank all the moms out there for everything they do. If I were to name every individual thing that each of us should be thankful for, I would be here till the end of time.

And to those who no longer have a mother I want to say that they live on through you, their memory, their legacy, and their love that lives inside of you. You must hold them close to your heart and continue to make them proud.

Mothers are unsung heroes. We cherish them, we honor them, and we celebrate them. But the real question is how we can celebrate them? How can we appreciate them? and I am not talking about those once off early morning in bed breakfasts on Mother’s Day or buying them fancy gift gifts for special occasions because that is not appreciation those acts fall into the trap of being generic.

Genuine appreciation and celebration come from daily acts. The main way I believe people can be shown appreciation is through respect. How many of you may believe that you respect your mother, but when was the last time you told your mom that you respected her? Women let alone mothers are deserving of the utmost respect and remember that before your mother became a mother, she was a lady and still should be treated as such.

We also need to remember that our mothers are humans as well they too make mistakes and when they mess up, they need to be forgiven. This is their first time being a parent and having to raise another human being, so cut them a bit of slack.

So, mothers are everything. They are our rocks, they are our providers, they are our pillars, they are our heroes.

They are our moms.

Thank you
