Overview

This weekend saw College’s basketball, cricket and water polo teams take on Westville Boys’ High School, with some disappointing results.

Basketball

College’s basketball teams headed down to Westville Boys’ High for a full round of fixtures which saw them secure 13 wins from their 21 matches.

1st team report (Mr Jacques Wilcock, MIC: Basketaball)

The game started off cagey with the two teams battling it out to establish themselves. Westville broke away to an early 12-point lead by the end of the 1st quarter, but a strong response by College, despite missing a key player, saw them pull the lead to within 3 points by halftime. It was a physical affair with both teams being in foul trouble through each quarter.  K Sibankulu scored 17 points in College’s attempt to win the game, but the experience of Westville’s senior players saw them push over the line, winning 60-67.

Cricket

The College 1st XI took on Westville Boys’ High on Goldstones on Saturday in a disappointing encounter which they lost by seven wickets.

1st team report (Mr Robbie Coutts: 1st XI coach)

College’s captain Chad Mason won the toss and elected to bat first, on a warm Maritzburg morning. The opening pair, Llewellyn Sutherland and Daniel Nadasan, got the team off to a solid start, with a partnership of 47. However, a moment of exceptional sportsmanship from Sutherland, who walked after being given not out, triggered the fall of regular wickets. Unfortunately, after the promising start, the College batsmen struggled to form in any meaningful partnerships. Despite the solid foundation, they were unable to recover, with wickets falling at regular intervals. The innings ended on a disappointing total of 112, all out in 33 overs.

Westville took control of the chase early, capitalizing on the powerplay fielding restrictions. Their opening batsmen dominated the early stages, putting pressure on College’s bowlers. The first wicket came via a sharp runout, but Westville remained in control. College managed to pick up two further wickets, thanks to captain Mason and off-spinner Oliver da Costa, but the total was too modest to defend. Westville comfortably reached the target in the 26th over, sealing a comprehensive victory.

College 112 all out; Nadasan 30
