THEME: BE A ROLE MODEL.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
“Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own self-respect, but for respect from others.”
~ Barry Bonds, the famous US baseballer.
FROM SCRIPTURE:
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12
“In everything set them a noble example by doing good works of every kind, and in your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.” – Titus 2:7:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3-4:
The reading from Timothy tells us that the first way to become a role model is to model a lifestyle for God. Paul specifically gives young Timothy five areas where he should set the example and where we should all set the example. He said that we should be an example – “…in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity”. Jesus would probably be considered as the greatest role model of all. This verse is challenging you to be a role model in five areas:
- Firstly, Speech: Watch what you say and how you say it. Use kind words, speak truthfully, and avoid gossip or bad language.
- Conduct: Your actions and behaviour should reflect your faith. Make good choices, be responsible, and treat others with respect.
- Love: Show love and kindness to those around you, even if they’re not always easy to get along with.
- Faith: Stand strong in your faith and don’t be afraid to share it with others.
- Purity: Keep your thoughts, words, and actions pure and clean. Avoid things that might lead you astray or compromise your values.
The lesson from TITUS above is that a role model should consistently demonstrate good character and moral values in their actions and words.
The lessons from Philippians above are –
Prioritize others: be selfless.
- Being a role model means putting the needs of others before your own and acting with humility.
Be a positive influence.
- Your actions and choices should inspire and encourage those around you to follow a righteous path.
By setting an example in these areas, you’ll not only earn the respect of others, but you’ll also inspire them to follow your lead. You’ll be a positive influence on those around you, and you’ll make a difference on a daily basis.
