Overview
Over the past weekend, thousands of Old Collegians returned to their alma mater for the 2025 Reunion Day, which saw the boys from the Red Black White take on Kearsney in a full round of hockey and rugby fixtures. It was a day when College triumphed as our boys played with heart, determination and true grit and fire.
On the hockey front College own 11 of their 14 games, losing just two and drawing one, with the 1st XI Red Army securing a 4-1 win. College’s rugby teams were undefeated against Kearsney winning 17 of their 18 games and drawing one. The 1st XV brought home a gutsy and determined 35-20 win.
Hockey
With 14 teams in action against Kearsney, College’s hockey teams dominated winning 11, losing 2 an drawing 1. The 1st XI played with fire from the start and much to the delight of the many supporters on Pape’s, they brought home a 4-1 win
1st XI report (1st XI coach and Hockey Director, Mr Mark Sanders)
College started off well, settling quickly, keeping the possession and building up play to set up several circle entries, With continued pressure they were awarded a penalty corner but failed to connect and get a shot on target, and then went one nil up through a tap in from Ross Van Der Vliet.
Kearsney settled and managed to create a few opportunities themselves. With the use of the overhead ball Kearsney looked to play in College’s half. College managed to turn the ball over and gained momentum going forward, and being awarded another penalty corner. Dane Jackso scored with a well-directed flick low to the keepers right.
In the second half Kearsney came out with more intent and fight; College absorbed some pressure and conceded a few penalty corners. Keasney scored a well-worked short corner variation and were looking for a second goal. College turned the ball over deep in their own half and with three passes Ross Van Der Vliet found himself one on one with the goalkeeper, and slid the ball perfectly under the rushing keeper to put College two goals ahead again.
College continued to keep the possession and seemed to have taken the wind out of the Kearsney team’s sails. With continued pressure they scored a fourth goal through a deflection from Rory Schirge. Final score 4-1 to College.

Rugby
College rugby teams produced outstanding results on Reunion Day with no losses against their foes from Kearsney. Winning 17 of their games, and drawing one, they played with passion in front of their thousands of Old Collegians on Goldstones.
1st XV report (1st XV coach, Mr Nico Breedt)
Reunion day is a massive occasion for all traditional schools and non-more so as for Maritzburg College. Thus, it was with great expectation to see how the College 1st XV would show up on the day and use the energy of all the support to put on their best performance.
College used an early counterattack opportunity to score the opening try through some slick passing and converted. Unfortunately, they failed to exit their half and Kearsney responded with a penalty to poles narrowing the College lead to 7-3. College responded soon after with a penalty shot and the kick to poles was successful. After a lot of back and forth and brilliant defence from both sides, Kearsney eventually broke the College defensive line and scored a well-rounded try and after 27 min the scores were tied at 10-10.
A brilliant individual try from College directly after the kickoff opened up the gap again but ill discipline by College resulted in another successful penalty attempt just before half-time, and the score at the break was 17-13 to College and anybody`s game.
In the second half College played a better territorial game and made wiser decisions with ball in hand. The first try of the half came after many good phases and College scored in the corner but the difficult conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 22-13. Kearsney then crossed the College line with a well executed penalty move to narrow the gap once again.
As expected on such a momentous day, the College defence held up for the remainder of the game and Kearsney couldn`t manage to get any more points on the board. College added to their lead with two more successful penalty attempts opening up their lead to 28-20. After a turnover ball from some more excellent defence, College attacked the blind and got the favourable bounce from a brilliantly weighted chip to score the final points and try of the match. The final score 35-20. A well-rounded performance from the boys and one that they can be extremely proud off.
