Maritzburg College warmly welcomes Mr. Alan Redfern as it’s 16th Headmaster, bringing with him a new chapter in the noble school’s history.

A man of deep educational passion, strong core values, and one with a clear path for the future of the school in mind, Mr. Redfern brings with him an abundance of experience in leadership, a lifelong dedication to teaching, and a steadfast belief in the College motto: Pro Aris et Focis – for hearth and home, which he obtained when teaching at College years ago.

His installation as the 16th headmaster of College is the result of an extensive nationwide hunt and an attentive selection process to find a person who not only showcases the tradition and spirit of Maritzburg College, but someone who is able to lead it into the next chapter of its reputable legacy as well. Mr. Redfern’s respectable reputation in academic excellence, cultural enrichment, and growth in the sports department has made him an excellent man for the job, with the support of both the Circuit Manager from the Department of Education, Mrs. FD Dlamini and the Chairman of the School Governing Body, Mr. Steve Colenbrander.

“The man you are becoming is more important than the things you achieve”, stated Mr. Redfern during his first official address to the school at the Term 3 2025 dedication assembly, highlighting his focus on character growth and self-development.

Known for his kind but resolute leadership style, Redfern has already sparked conversation and excitement for his official beginning as headmaster this term.

Students across all grades have shown their enthusiasm and interest about the new leader, with many wondering how the change will affect the school. Staff have welcomed his arrival, noting his views on wholistic education and his collaborative spirit.

As the institution continues forward under his leadership, expectations are high, and many have a sense of optimism. From our fabled field of Gold to moments the classroom and even in the wider community, Alan Redfern is expected to leave a lasting imprint on the College legacy.

With the dawn of this new era, Maritzburg College stands ready to grow stronger – built on tradition, propelled by innovation, and led by a man who understands both.
