The boys of College, parents, special guests and staff gathered in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall for the 2025 Sport and Cultural Award Ceremony to celebrate the exceptional sporting and cultural achievements of some of our learners. With arguably one of the largest and most diverse co-curricular programmes in the country, Maritzburg College provides boys with every opportunity to develop, grow and even excel in their chosen area, and our boys have certainly achieved that.
n his address, College’s Headmaster, Mr Alan Redfern celebrated the achievements of the prize winners while emphasising the deeper values behind success—effort, commitment, and participation. He highlighted the school’s holistic approach to education, balancing academics with sport, culture, and character development. He emphasised the valuable life lesson learned through sport and cultural activities; resilience, teamwork, creativity, and integrity—qualities essential for life beyond school. In closing, Mr Redfern acknowledged the collective support of coaches, staff, and parents, and reminded the boys that true success lies in personal growth, values, and contributing to a legacy greater than oneself.

Guest speaker at the event, Mr Sandi Dlangalala, a proud OC from 2009, delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech reflecting on his journey from a small-town boy in Ladysmith to a successful theatre actor. He expressed deep gratitude for being invited to speak, especially by Mr Ron Barbour, his former drama teacher who played a pivotal role in encouraging his passion for performance. He reminisced about his time at College, highlighting his involvement in both cultural and sporting activities — from choir and drama to athletics and rugby, even captaining the spirited 5th team, the Bushpigs. He emphasized how College instilled in him the school’s core values; honesty, integrity, courage, self-discipline, commitment, and respect, which continue to guide his life and career.
Mr Dlangalala shared personal challenges from his early career, including years of limited work, financial struggles, and moments of doubt. Despite contemplating giving up, he was driven by an inner force to persevere. A turning point came when he landed a significant role in Peter Pan, reigniting his passion and commitment to his dream. He encouraged the boys to embrace the ethos — that “what you put in is what you get out” — and to never be ashamed of applying themselves passionately. He reminded them that greatness is born from perseverance and that obstacles are part of the journey. His parting message to all the boys, and especially the 6th formers, was to carry their tenacity into the future and strive to become future leaders and changemakers — men of honour, compassion, and strength.
