1st XI Report – Robbie Coutts (1st XI coach)

The College First XI brought home an exciting victory this past weekend, against DHS, despite being under pressure for a large portion of the match.

College captain Johnathan van Zyl won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a pitch that looked like it may break up in the afternoon.

At the start to the bowling innings, the DHS bowling attack thrived in the conditions that assisted the seam bowlers, taking two early wickets. College were in a precarious position of 28 for 2 after the first 10 over power play. Johnathan van Zyl and Creedon Smith worked hard in the difficult conditions for a 56 run partnership, Smith getting out on the stroke of tea for 24, the score 75 for 3 after 25 overs. Van Zyl linked well with Bryn Brokensha after tea, the pair putting on 63 for the 4th wicket.  The College middle order through Luc Jacobs and Brokensha changed the momentum of the game in the closing overs, the pair added 66 off 51 balls. Brokensha batted intelligently, running well and punishing any loose deliveries, his 77 off 78 balls getting College to a defendable 226 for 6.

DHS got off to a great start, the opening partnership of 42 off 6 overs was broken by Jacobs who trapped the opening batsman LBW. There was very little opportunity for the College team in the next 12 overs, the DHS batsmen punishing anything lose. The partnership of 65 was finally broken by leg spinner Chad Mason, DHS 107 for 2. At tea, DHS were in total control at a 136 for 2, needing 90 to win in 25 overs. The introduction of off spinner James Wiggill slowed the scoring rate and it was Wiggill who made the breakthrough, with DHS still in control at 163 for 3 in the 32nd over. Caden Hohls changed the game in the 38th over, taking two wickets, both LBW. The break through spurred the College team on and knowing fully well that the only way to win the game was to bowl DHS, never allowed the opposition batsmen to settle and any partnerships to develop. Brokensha returned in the 39th over and continued where Hohls left to pick up another wicket, the score going from 181 for 3 to 181 for 6. With the pressure on the DHS lower order, the College team upped a level with their fielding, not allowing DHS any singles. The College bowlers lacked discipline and bowled far too many wides which allowed DHS to keep the score board ticking and in the process go past the 200 mark. Brokensha picked up 2 more wickets in the 43rd and 45th over, before Jacobs finished the game bowling the last batsman to give College a thrilling 13 run win.

Waterpolo

The weekend’s fixtures saw College 1st to 4th teams and some of our junior teams taking on Hilton and DHS.

1st team report (Darren Sherriff – Director of Aquatics)

Over the weekend College water polo had a double header against DHS and Hilton at DHS. Our first game saw us against DHS, which was a very exciting encounter. The game started with DHS taking an early lead and managing to extend it to 0-3 at one stage. College fought hard and brought the game back and both teams were neck and neck until the final chukka. It was DHS that was able to pull away in the end and won the match 10-12.

College later played Hilton, for the second time this season. After going down 1-22 in our game at Hilton, the team was determined to better their performance. They did just that and fought hard and scored some great goals. Half way through the 3rd chukka Hilton had a slight edge of 6-8 until College were penalised with a player being excluded from the game and having to play man down for 4 minutes. Hilton capitalized on this opportunity and extended their lead. By the time the College player could return, the damage had already been done and we went down 6-14.
