Overview Sporting Achievements
This weekend saw the official start to the 3rd term’s summer sport programme, with cricket, water polo and basketball matches against Westville Boys’ High. Results confirmed that these two school are evenly matched across the codes, College winning six of the 11 cricket matches, and nine of the 18 basketball encounters. Westville however proved the stronger in the pool.
There also great results for College’s shooting and mountain biking boys.
Cricket
This weekend, College played against Westville with most of the teams in action, excluding the 1st XI as the Westville 1st team were on tour.
It was a good start for the term’s summer fixtures, which saw College win six of their 11 matches, one was tied and they lost two. Two matches were abandoned with no result due to lightning.

Basketball
For the start of term 3 summer sport, College had 18 basketball teams in action over the weekend against Westville. In an evenly matched encounter, overall results saw College win nine of their matches. The 1st team enjoyed a great win with a final score of 76-39.

The 3rd term basketball season kicked off at Westville this past weekend with an exhilarating start for College 1st team. The first quarter saw the boys of the red, black and white open the scoreboard with two points from centre D le Roux. In a tightly contested 1st quarter, the score ended with College having a narrow 13-11 lead. College were hungry for a win and were determined not to let the opposition room to breathe. Their defence was solid throughout the 3rd quarter, resulting in Westville only scoring 9 points. The game intensified in the final quarter, with Westville frustrated by the agility and endurance displayed by College. The game ended with a final two points scored again by D le Roux bringing the final score to 76 – 39 in favour of College.

Waterpolo
College has six water polo team in action over the weekend, and won two of their matches, losing four. Westville proved too strong for the senior teams, but the junior teams both secured good wins in the pool.

College water polo teams all travelled to Westville for the first summer fixture. It was a tough encounter and the first team struggled, finding themselves 0-4 down before they could score a goal. College gave a good effort in trying to score more goals but unfortunately Westville was too strong, and the end result was 4-17 to Westville.

Shooting
Maritzburg College had excellent results at the 7th round of the SAARA league with College boys taking top places in the U20 and U16 events.

Athletics
Athletics Mixed inter schools meeting at Michaelhouse
College was teamed with Epworth for the meeting
College won the under 17 mixed 4x400m senior race with Epworth.
Our 4x100m ladder relay team, consisting of only College boys, also won.
L Makatini won the 100m under 16 100m
L Kayembe won the 100m under 17
L Kayembe was also awarded best male performance for his 100m in a time of 10.6s.
Voortrekker High school relay meeting .
College entered both u/15 and U17 relay teams.

Mixed distance relay (2nd) for this event; 7 athletes run – 1x400m, 2x200m and 4x100m.

U/17 also won the Swedish U/19 relay. This race is 1x100m, 1x200m, 1x300m and 1x400m.
College were the overall winners and secured the trophy ahead of St Charles, Westville, Voortrekker, and Carter amongst others
Mountain biking
Maritzburg College’s Luke Newlands placed 1st at the finals of the KZN Schools MTB lap series held at Grace College.
