After a two year Covid-related hiatus, College was thrilled to hold its annual Sports and Cultural Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 21 September in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall. The event provided a much needed opportunity to recognise and celebrate the year’s outstanding achievements across the school’s large and diverse range of sport and cultural codes.
College’s headmaster, Chris Luman congratulated all of the boys on their efforts for the year, and paid tribute to the staff who have coached, trained and supported the school’s full sporting and cultural programme.
College was also very proud to welcome back Siya Nolutshungu OC 2013 as the guest speaker at the ceremony. An AFCON hockey champion and Olympian, and a member of the South African men’s hockey team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Siya provided a thought-provoking and personal account of his sporting journey after leaving College. He also gave the boys valuable advice; reminding them of the importance of focusing on their past, present and their future, to work hard, strive for balance, to be humble, embrace every opportunity, to never give up, and to work to build life-long relationships.
A standout winner amongst the boys on the night was College’s Deputy Head Prefect, Sphephelo Mbonambi, who was awarded the Robertson trophy for outstanding service to Audio Visual, the DJ Berry-Jennings Cup as the athletics U18 champion and Victor Ludorum, the Arnold Moseya trophy for best defensive basketball player, as well as the prestigious Headmaster’s award for Best All-round Sportsman (in pic), and the Olivier trophy for Sport and Culture. Other top awardees included the Headmaster’s Award for the Highlight of the Year to Neo Mosebi, the Graham Holder Trophy for the Best Overall Contribution to Culture at College to Ayabonga Ntuli, and the Headmaster’s Award for the Sportsman of the Year, Lihle Bester.
