Sporting Results 15 October 2022

Overview Sporting Achievements

This weekend, College was up against Durban-based rivals Northwood in a series of cricket, basketball and water polo matches, although a number of fixtures were cancelled due to the rainy weather. In addition, College had teams participating in the Top Schools Water Polo tournament, KZN Individual Stayers Squash tournament, as well as cricket matches against Helpmekaar and the last canoeing event of the year.

 

KZN T20 Schools Night series

Maritzburg College was up against St Charles for the final of the KZN T20 School night series. Batting first College made 139/9; with Delport scoring 37, and Thomas 34. St Charles replied with 145/5, which saw College lose the match by 5 wickets. Congratulation to Johnathan van Zyl who was awarded Batsman of the tournament.

 

Cricket vs Northwood

Due to the rainy weather, only the Durban-based cricket matches were able to take place, with the  2nd XI team, U15B, U14B and U14C managing to get their games in, although some with reduced overs.

Cricket vs Helpmekaar

College’s 1st XI batted first scoring 201/7; Thomas top scored with 59 and Smith 50. Helpmekaar replied with 203/5, and College lost the match by 5 wickets.

Helpmekaar U15A batted first scoring 121 all out; Hughes 2/23, Pembridge 3/22, D Naidoo 4/38. College replied with 122/6, Bester scoring 45 and College won by 4 wickets.

College U14A made 231/7; with good batting from Willson 53 and Fabre 55*. Helpmekaar were bowled out for 143 all out; de Bruyn taking 2/9, and du Toit 2/8, which saw College win the match by 89 runs.

 

Basketball

This weekend, College had 14 basketball teams in action against Northwood. With the rainy weather there were some adjustments to the matches, which saw College win 9 matches and lose 5. The 1st team went down narrowly 62-64.

1st team Match Report

Maritzburg College stayers team played Northwood’s leavers team in a closely contested game. Both teams played with intensity and passion in a games which went down to the wire. At of the end of regulation, the scores were tied. Neither side gave way, and it was only after the 2nd overtime when Northwood scored the last two free throws, that they took the win 62-64.

Canoeing

Two College teams participated in the last schools league event for 2022 this weekend, hosted by Hilton College, in a relay format. The team of Joshua Glyn-Cuthbert, Ian Hemingway, James Goble and James Sharpe competed in a nail biting race against Michaelhouse, which saw College narrowly beaten to the finish line. The second College team consisting of Jayden Jansen van Rensburg, Simon Norton and Chris Adam secured a 5th place finish.

 

Squash

A number of College squash players participated in the KZN Individual Stayers’ squash tournament this past weekend. There was a high calibre of squash played, with the following players finishing in the top 10 of their relevant age group:

Waterpolo

This weekend College team took part in the Top Schools Water Polo tournament as well as in fixtures against Northwood.

Water polo vs Northwood

College’s 2nd, 3rd, U15B and U14B teams were in action against Northwood, which saw all the team lost their matches.
