Assembly 24 October: Core Values

ASSEMBLY 24 OCTOBER: THEME – CORE VALUES

Good morning and a warm welcome to our guest Ms Christy Herselman who will be addressing you later in the assembly

Our theme for this week is revisiting our Core Values of: Commitment, Courage, Honesty, Integrity , Respect and Self -Discipline  and considering them carefully as we finalise our traditions and privileges in the discussions that have been held over many weeks now with Mr Sparrow at RCL and mentors.

College boys generally know their core values and implement most of them most of the time. If I asked you which one is the most important to you I would guess that respect would be key as it is always brough up by the seniors that the juniors do not have respect for the seniors. If you respect yourself in the first instance and others then there would not be an issue. Mutual respect is key. However, we are not going to debate that today.

Many people have thought that we should add the core value and virtue of humility to the our list and there is a strong argument for that. However, we have resisted the drive to do so as I believe our core values, if lived by their true meanings, will cover the core value of humility.

From Scripture:

“ … for all who exalt [elevated]  themselves will be humbled , but all who humble themselves will be exalted .”   – Luke 18: 14

“Pride ends in humiliation, while humility ends in honour.” – Proverbs 29: 23

Mother Teresa said the following about humility:

  1. To speak as little as possible about yourself.
  2. To keep busy with your own affairs and not those of others.
  3. To avoid curiosity.
  4. To accept small irritations with good humour.
  5. To overlook the faults of others.
  6. To accept criticisms willingly even if unjust
  7. To accept contempt, being forgotten and disregarded.
  8. To be kind and gentle even under provocation
  9. Do not seek to be admired and loved.
  10. Do not protect yourself behind your own dignity.
  11. To conceded in discussions, even when you are correct.
  12. To always choose the more difficult task.

Some of these are very hard to apply at all times, but are a good reminder for us to consider.

A prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, today we ask for your help to walk humbly with our brothers as pride causes division. Help us to humble ourselves and to count ourselves as equals with one another. Help us to value one another in this humble spirit so that we may all live to our fullest. In your name we pray; Amen.

Passing of the Drum ceremony:

First of all my sincere congratulations to all the 5th  formers who were announced and inducted into the various roles for 2023. Well done gentlemen! Thanks to all the staff and boys for the role in this wonderful ceremony.

As from today, the 5th form need to step up, accept the baton of leadership and take on the challenge of leading College over the next 12 months to greater heights in every aspect of College life.

The Prefects for 2023 and House Leaders, BE prefects etc take over with immediate effect and you are to support them 100%. They are in those positions because you have selected them – simple as that !  You are to respect their positions and abide by there instructions as they are ultimately representing the headmaster, EXCO and or housemasters or HODs. It is the title that you MUST respect. If you do not then there will be consequences.

However, as with teachers, if you feel that you have been unfairly treated then you are to inform your mentor, housemaster ideally in the first instance NOT your parents! If the matter is not resolved satisfactorily then take it to the next level viz senior staff. It will be dealt with but maybe not always to your satisfaction!

EDUCATION:

You have exactly four more days of formal school left before your final assessments commence. It is imperative that you seek the support and advice of your teachers if there are any areas in which you are still struggling. It is not too late. The teachers want you to be in a position to obtain the best possible results in these assessment. But it is ultimately up to you!

I wish you every success and that you will obtain the results that you deserve!

I will now share a brief story with you

‘Knowledge will fill you with joy.’ – Proverbs 2:10 NLT

One Friday morning an eager young Stanford University student stood before Louis Janin, a well-known mining engineer. He was seeking employment. Janin informed him, ‘All I need right now is a stenographer.’ The young man said eagerly, ‘Fine, I’ll take the job.’ Then he added, ‘But I can’t come back until Tuesday.’ Janin agreed, and the next Tuesday the young man reported for work as scheduled. Janin asked him, ‘Why is it that you couldn’t come back before Tuesday?’ The young man replied, ‘Because I had to rent a typewriter and learn how to use it.’ The young typist was Herbert Hoover, whose can-do attitude eventually led him through the doors of the White House to become one of America’s presidents. By taking shortcuts – you risk short-changing your future. Your unwillingness to learn today will leave you unprepared for tomorrow’s opportunities. No skill you learn will ever be lost. Gleaning knowledge and learning new skills builds confidence and sharpens your mind. Successful people have one thing in common: they never quit learning!

SPORTS RESULTS

On Friday, College hosted an inter-school’s athletic meet at the Msunduzi stadium. Attended by a number of schools, College won the meet convincingly with some outstanding individual track and field performances.

Over this weekend, College had a number of summer fixtures planned against local rivals St Charles College. Unfortunately with the heavy rain on Saturday, all the cricket and a number of other fixtures had to be cancelled. Some basketball and water polo matches did take place.

College’s squash senior and junior teams both secured excellent wins against St Charles.
