Overview Sporting Achievements
Over this weekend, College took on Glenwood, long-time friends and rivals from Durban, in a full round of summer fixtures. After a number of weekends of rain-induced match cancellations, it was good to have cricket back on campus, and to see our 1st XI secure a great 110 run victory, putting together arguably their best performance of the term.
There were also great wins for the basketball teams with the 1st team bringing home a 82-59 victory, and overall results of nine wins from nine games.
Cricket
Most of the weekend’s cricket matches were against Glenwood. Overall results saw the #RedBlackWhite win 11 of their 15 matches, losing just four, three of which were on tough staggers.
Against Glenwood, College won 11 of the 12 games, with just the one lost for the 2nd XI.

On a warm sunny morning in Goldstones, College won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a wicket that would offer the bowlers early assistance, but with the outfield damp from the previous day’s rain, would quickly become easier to bat.
At the start to the bowling innings, the Glenwood bowling attack put College under pressure with some well-disciplined bowling, Creedon Smith and Liam Armstrong absorbed the early pressure forcing the Glenwood captain to bowl his opening bowlers for longer than he would have wanted. The opening partnership was eventually broken when Armstrong was well caught at slip, the score on 25. College were never able to completely take control of the game but kept themselves in the contest with many small partnerships. The biggest partnership of 49 between Bryn Brokensha and Rhett Quin set the game up for College, chasing 209 for victory. Quin top scored for his team with a well-played 42 not out, with other important contributions were from Caleb Thomas (34), Van Zyl (31) Brokensha (30) and Smith who scored a patient 29.
Glenwood got off to a steady start, getting to 23 before Bryn Brokensha who bowled with good pace and control, bowled the opening batsman to break the opening partnership. Brokensha struck twice in his next over to put Glenwood under pressure at 30 for 3 after 11 overs. Glenwood were never able to put together any substantial partnerships and lost wickets at regular occasions. Leg spinner Chad Mason bowled with control and accuracy, picking up 3 wickets for 26 in his spell of 8 overs and 5 balls. Cayden Hohls in tandem with Mason bowled tightly, picking up 2 wickets to ensure College kept Glenwood under pressure from both ends. The College fielding was outstanding all afternoon, Mason executed a sharp runout and Caleb Thomas took an excellent catch in the deep, much to the joy of boarders watching from the Kent Pavilion.

Basketball
This weekend, College played against Glenwood in the main. College won all nine of their matches against Glenwood with the 1st team winning 82-59.
1st team Match Report
Maritzburg College’s first team hosted the Glenwood grasshoppers in an attempt to avenge a disappointing loss to St Charles. The APH, which has become a fortress, failed to intimidate the grasshoppers who roared out of the gate taking a lead early. Having lost all their games throughout the day, Glenwood had everything to lose. In contrast, College was slow and sluggish. All aspects of the game were dominated by Glenwood in the first half.
In the second half, College stepped up and took charge. With D le Roux, T Crawford and L Dlamini out of action it was left to I Masinga, A Ngcobo and 2nd former C Fynn to try and salvage the game. The teams were tied at the end of the third quarter, with nothing to choose between them. The ever-present College supporters backed their team with song and dance during the fourth quarter, and the momentum shifted in favour of the hosts. To the cheers and chanting of Red Black White, the College team grew more confident and slowly pulled away from Glenwood, ultimately defeating them 82-59. A special mention must go to 2nd former C Fynn for his outstanding performance.

Waterpolo
This weekend College’s 1st team took part in the Northwood Stayers tournament. They secured good wins over Glenwood, Northwood 2nd team and Reddam Helderfontein before narrowly losing 2-4 against Westville in the pool stages. College then lost against Northwood 1st team and beat Northwood 2nd team in the cross pool stages. The final match was against Glenwood where we lost 5-6 on penalties and finished 6th at the tournament.
