Special recognition of distinguished service to College

MCOBA President, Mr Andrew Clayton presented Mr Ken Hackland with an Old Collegians blazer, symbolising the award of special membership of the MCOBA.

Maritzburg College together with the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association, was proud to pay special recognition to one of our more “senior” staff members, Mr Ken Hackland. As the estates manager at College, Mr Hackland has rendered distinguished service to our school since he first started here, 24 years ago.

Many of the more recent buildings at College were built under the direction, management, care and love of Mr Hackland – from the Alan Paton Memorial Hall, to all the staff houses, new Shepstone House, the BE dining hall, all the boarding extensions, the hockey pavilion, the Jury Centre, the Terraces, the new Philip Nel Pavilion, and so much more.

But all that all says very little about a man who works often far away from the limelight, never wants a fuss made about himself, and gives so much of his time and energy, week in and week out, day and night, for the betterment of our school. Mr Hackland celebrated his 75th birthday two days before Christmas.

In the words of the Senior Deputy Headmaster, Mr Matthew Marwick; “Mr Hackland, we the school and the Old Collegians will never fully be able to repay you for your service. To show our deep appreciation and in recognition of this, please accept this special category of membership of the Old Boys’ Association, marked by the handover of the Old Collegian Blazer. We ask you to come forward and to accept this blazer from our President on behalf of the 12 000 living Old Collegians, in recognition that you will always be one of us.”
