Overview Sporting Achievements

College’s athletes continue to dominate winning the aQuelle Inter-School Athletics Meet for the 4th week in a row. A highlight of the week was the interhouse Championship Gala which saw excellent individual and team performances including the breaking of a 41 year record! The 1st soccer team were excited to be part of the exciting SuperSport Schools 24 hour school sports dedicated channel (DSTV channel 216) launch, when they took on Westville Boys’ High School winning the match 2-0.

College’s last summer fixture of the week were against St Charles.  A few cricket games were cancelled and several others abandoned due to lightening. Basketball against St Charles rivalled the old College/ Alex encounters of the 1980s and 1990’s, and the Alan Paton Memorial Hall was packed to capacity for the final match between the number 1 and 2 sides in the province.

Cricket

1st team report (Robbie Coutts, 1st XI coach)

College captain Bryn Brokensha won the toss on the Goldstones and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a good pitch.

The College openers started slowly, working hard to see off the new ball. Creedon Smith was the first to go with the score on 30. A mix of good bowling and poor shot selection saw College slump to the precarious position of 39 for 6, captain Brokensha and Asanda Khumalo got their team to tea without any further loss, College 61 for 6. The pair batted intelligently putting on the biggest partnership of the match, that of 93, Brokensha out for a well-played 59, Khumalo in the quest for quick runs at the end of the innings was unfortunate to not make his 50, bowled for 47. College batted their 50 overs ending on 144 for 9.

St Charles started well, losing their first wicket with the score on 47 in the 16 overs. Leg spinner Chad Mason bowled with good control and picked up two wickets in two overs and in-between an excellent throw from Brokensha executed a runout. Unfortunately, in the 21st over the lightening siren went off forcing the players off the field; the umpires called for an early tea but during the tea break persistent rain ensured the players would not return. The match was abandoned with St Charles on 61 for 3.

Scores in brief:
College 144 for 9; Khumalo 47, Brokensha 59
St Charles 61 for 3

Basketball

Basketball against St Charles rivals the old College/ Alex encounters of the 1980s and 1990’s, and the Alan Paton Memorial Hall was packed to capacity for the final match between the number 1 and 2 sides in the province. College won 13 of the 16 games played, losing just 3. Unfortunately our 1st team went down to a strong St Charles side, 47-56, in a very exciting game.

1st team report

Alan Paton Hall was abuzz with excitement as the final game of the season saw a clash between basketball titans Maritzburg College and St Charles. The boys of the red, black and white were in the lead in the 1st quarter with a determined Ngcobo dribbling past his opponents, it seemed the gods were in College’s favour. However, by the end of the 2nd  quarter,  it was Maritzburg College that found itself on the back foot. as the battle between both teams kept the crowd entertained in an electrifying game which left the score in the Maritzburg College favour at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, St Charles closed the gap in score as  Maritzburg College was struggling to find its groove after a few missed baskets left them feeling defeated as play continued. St Charles capitalised on this and dominated the 4th quarter. With the game in full swing, College struggled to find the momentum needed to defeat St Charles  who had built a 9-point lead and were dominating the game which ultimately saw the Saints win 47-56. A great game for the natural to watch. An amazing feat to see the number 1 and 2 teams battle it out on the last day of the season.

Summary results
14A won 32-28
16A won 44-23
1st team lost 47-56
