Assembly 21 October – Core Values

THEME – CORE VALUES  

Good morning and a warm welcome to our guests Debbie Straw from Comrades Marathon Medical logistics  who will be addressing you later in the assembly.

Our theme for this week is revisiting our Core Values of: Commitment, Courage, Honesty, Integrity , Respect and Self -Discipline.

Tony Hsieh states that “Your personal core values define who you are.”

College boys generally know their core values and implement most of them most of the time. If I asked you which one is the most important to you I would guess that respect would be key as it is always brought up by the seniors that the juniors do not have respect for the seniors. If you respect yourself in the first instance and others then there would not be an issue. Mutual respect is key.

 

From Scripture:  

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4 v 6 -9

‘I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me.’  Philippians 4 v 13

 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” – Matthew 22 v37

God wants His people first and above all to love Him with every part of their being. The heart and soul and mind may describe the centres of emotion, action, and thought. The point of the command is not to separate them, though, but to join them together with every aspect of a person fully committed to loving God.

The way you think is being transformed by the renewing of your mind

 

Frank Outlaw says the following on one’s thoughts :

“Watch your thoughts; they become words
Watch your words; they become actions
Watch your actions; they become habits
Watch your habits; they become character
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny”

 

An adaption of St Francis Prayer

Dear Lord
Make me an instrument for your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me grow love.
Where there is an injury, let me forgive.
Where there is doubt, let there be faith.
Where there is despair, let there be hope.
Where there is darkness, let there be light.
And where there is sadness, let there be joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, but to console
To be understood, but to understand
To be loved, but to love
For it is in the giving that we receive
It is in the forgiveness  that we are forgiven.
It is in dying that we are born into eternal life.

 

Finally, Heavenly Father,
We thank you that through Jesus Christ we can face anything.
We thank you that when your spirit lives within us , we can do all things through you.
Heavenly Father, we pray that you will help us focus our minds on the things of God, and as we focus our minds, so our hearts will also become focussed on your things.
Then ultimately, our spirits and our souls and our lives will begin to reflect that.
In your name we pray

SPECIAL GUEST

Ms Debbie Straw from the Comrades Marathon Association medical team visited the school and attended the morning assembly to formerly acknowledge and thank the more than 100 boys who served as stretcher bearers for this year’s race. This has been a traditional role taken on by College boys for a number of years.

The boys were thanked not just for doing stretcher duty, but also for assisting generally with any tasks needed, for their polite and willing attitudes, and for showing true College spirit and energy! Well done and thank you boys!

Ms Straw handed a certificate of appreciation to Dr Luman, Headmaster as well as to each boy who had assisted on race day.

 

 EDUCATION

You have just a few more days of formal school left before your final assessments commence. It is imperative that you seek the support and advice of your teachers if there are any areas in which you are still struggling. It is not too late. We, the teachers want you to be in a position to obtain the best possible results in these examinations. But it is ultimately up to you!

I wish you every success and that you will obtain the results that you deserve!

SPORTS RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK:

Over this weekend, College had a number of summer fixtures planned against local rivals St Charles College. Unfortunately with the heavy rain on Saturday afternoon some of the games could not be completed.  There were also good results for the basketball and water polo matches, and a number of boys took top 3 placed at the Athletics aQuellé Spring series 4.
