Jonathan Werth, College DUX of 2024, who obtained an exceptional 8 distinctions in his final exams shared some words of wisdom with this year’s 6th form boys and parents
Good evening, staff, parents, and the Class of 2025,
Today, I want to share some advice to help guide you through your final year. This is your last lap. It’s the culmination of all the years of schooling, late-night study sessions, victories, failures, and lessons learned along the way. This year is not just about exams or results; it’s about stepping into your full potential and preparing for the future that awaits beyond these walls.
Matric is a daunting year for many. The pressure can feel immense, and it can often come from all directions. But it’s important to learn how to manage that pressure. As Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk once said, “Pressure is a privilege.” Learn to embrace it, and use it as your motivation to push for success.
Don’t let the work pile up. Life can get overwhelming, and the last thing you want is to be trying to re-teach yourself the entire syllabus in the days leading up to your exams. Work consistently throughout the year, so when the time comes for trials or final exams, you’re already ahead of the game.
Time is your most valuable resource, so don’t waste it. Striking a balance between your academics, sports, and social life will help you perform at your best while maintaining your well-being. It’s all about finding harmony in your day-to-day life.
Something that has helped me is learning to compete with myself. Only you know if you are truly giving your best effort. Focus on progress, not perfection. Show up every single day and give it your all. Too often, I’ve heard adults express regret, saying they wish they’d applied themselves more in high school, especially in matric. Don’t leave school with any regrets.
Grade 11 might have been tough, and I know some of you may be disappointed with your results from last year. But remember, you can’t change what’s in the past. You can’t change those marks—but that’s exactly why you have this year. Matric is your chance to prove what you’re truly capable of.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you’re struggling. Whether it’s from a teacher or a friend, I’m sure they’ll be happy to assist. And if you’re someone like me who doesn’t always feel comfortable asking questions in class, remember you can always ask for clarification after the lesson.
It’s also important to remember to keep doing the things that make you, you. Find your escape, whether it’s sport, the gym, video games, or reading. These activities provide a much-needed break and help you recharge. When you come back to your work, you’ll have a clearer mind and fewer distractions.
Take one day at a time, stay disciplined, and always keep your eyes on the bigger picture. When things get tough—and they will—remember, you’re not just working for results; you’re building resilience, character, and a future you can be proud of.
Before we started finals last year, Mrs. Finnie shared a thought with us that was a real wake-up call for many. She said, “Do not go through more than 12 years of school, 12 years of your
life, and have nothing to show for it.” Let that reminder fuel your determination as you move through this year.
Remember to be kind to yourself, support your brothers, and build a positive legacy. Grade 12 is a balance between hard work and enjoying your final school moments. Stay focused, but don’t forget to cherish the journey.
