Overview
College boys competed in a wide range of winter sporting festivals as well as in the South African Canoe Sprint Championships, the Athletics Interprovincial Championships and in the Shooting League 2 during the school holidays.
In addition, we had two other boys do extremely well in their chosen sports. Third former Dylan Martin competed in the BMX racing at the South African National Cup Series in Hermanus, where he secured a South African National Gold medal and a Silver Summer champion medal, and is currently leading the championship series in his 15 – 16 age group. Diego Rencken took part in the Sodi World Series SA Go-Karting race winning the C Final for the 3rd race.
Athletics Interprovincial Championships
Maritzburg College’s athletes competed in two Interprovincial Athletics championships over the holiday. The first was held at Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town, where two boys represented KZN. Benjamin Andrews jump 1.80m in the High Jump and finished 16th overall, while Bonokuhle Mhlongo ran 11.51s in the 100m but unfortunately did not qualify for the final.
The second meet was held in Bloemfontein. Theo Boshoff represented KZN Schools at the meeting and finished 8th in the Shotput and Discus events. Congratulations to all three athletes.
Canoeing
College’s canoeists produced excellent results at the South African Sprint Championships held at Roodeplaat dam from 4-6 April.

Hockey
College embarked on several tours over the holidays with four of the six teams travelling to Johannesburg. Overall they played 31 matches winning 16, drawing 5, losing 9 and one with no result.
The 1st team, 16A and 14A, matched up against some of the top schools in the country with NOMADS Hockey Festival. There was some incredible hockey played with outstanding results.
The College 2nd XI team won six out of six games having conceded just 1 goal at the Michaelhouse Festival. This a great achievement as they played some schools’ 1st teams.
The 14B and 16B used the opportunity of their respective festivals to work on overall game play by focusing on technical and tactical components, and there was good growth by both these teams.

Rugby
College’s junior teams participated in two festivals over the holidays; the Skonk Nicholson Festival which was hosted at Maritzburg College with the 14A, 16A and 16B teams competing, while the 15A team took part in the Francois Swart Festival at Affies. The 14A and 16A teams won all their fixtures with some convincing margins, while the 16B won two games and lost one. The 15A team faced tough competition and secured a solid win against Kempton Park and put up strong performances against Helpmekaar and Noordheuwel.
