Alan Redfern returns to Maritzburg College to take up the helm on 1 July 2025
We are proud and delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Alan Redfern as the 16th Headmaster of Maritzburg College, effective 1 July 2025.
Alan is currently serving as the Headmaster of Stanford Lake College in Limpopo Province. He brings a wealth of knowledge and 27 years’ experience as an educator across a wide range of schools including St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown and St David’s Marist, Inanda. He is no stranger to Maritzburg College having served as a biology and physical education teacher at College in his early career.
The School Governing Body believes that Alan is the right fit to lead and position Maritzburg College at the forefront of education in South Africa. His appointment follows a rigorous process, supported by the Department of Education.
Alan says he is honoured and proud to be appointed as the guardian of the school. He adds, “College is a school synonymous with excellence, passion, pride and competitiveness. It has always been a school to be reckoned with and I’m excited by the opportunity to help enhance that reputation even further, with the support of the College community. The school’s value system aligns directly with who I am and what I believe the education of boys is all about. The 162 years of history gives College a clear identity and capacity to face the challenges of the future.”
Alan is married to Dionne, who is the Headmistress of Epworth High School for Girls, and has two adult children, Megan and David.
