Matthew Marwick to take the helm at Maritzburg College’s Sister School – Girls’ High School

It is with immense pride that we congratulate Mr Matthew Marwick on his appointment as headmaster of our sister school, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High.

After a 21-year journey at College, Matthew is looking forward to his exciting new chapter. Whilst we are sad to be losing him, we could not be happier for him as he begins this new chapter of his career as the ‘captain of the ship’ at GHS.

A little history (about the historian Matthew)

In 2004, Matthew, who was a respected lawyer, followed his calling to become a teacher, becoming a fourth-generation teacher in his family.

A passionate historian and Old Collegian, he began his career teaching economics, moving through the ranks until he was appointed Acting Headmaster. During his tenure at College, Matthew has made an invaluable contribution, wearing many hats and holding positions such as Subject Head of History; HOD: Prefects; House Master of Nathan House and Clark House; Deputy Headmaster: Boarding; Deputy Head Discipline and Marketing; Senior Deputy Headmaster, including driving Marketing and Admissions, and, ultimately, deputising for the Headmaster. Over the past few months, he has served as Acting Headmaster.

Into the future

Speaking about his future in education, Matthew said: “I am so honoured and privileged to have been appointed to lead our historic and proud sister school, barely 500m up College Road. I am sure that I will silently salute Clark House each day as I drive along College Road to my new school, but I am thrilled to have been given a chance to lead and serve a school that has such a rich heritage, is so well resourced, and is so beloved by so many.”

Throughout his tenure, Matthew has exemplified true leadership and mentorship. Not only has he motivated our boys, but he has been instrumental in helping to drive key developments that have continued to shape Maritzburg College into the outstanding institution it is today.

We are confident that GHS is gaining an exceptional leader. Although he will be greatly missed by the entire College community, we will continue to cheer on Matthew as he reaches this significant career milestone leading our sister school.

 #RedBlackWhite Meets Green

Matthew admits that, from the age of two, GHS has been a big part of his life. His mother taught Latin and English at the school and his sister and cousins went on to be educated there.

In Matthew’s words: “I look forward to learning more about the GHS of 2025. With the help of others, it will be a privilege to devote my energies to guiding and shaping the present and future GHS, raising its name high, and also cementing its links of friendship and co-operation with the home of the #RedBlackWhite down the road.”

As a school community, we are looking forward to fostering even stronger ties between our schools as two schoolboy friends – Matthew and Alan Redfern (‘Mudrats’ from the class of 1983 at Merchiston) – lead GHS and College into the future.

In Closing

We are thrilled that the Marwick family remains a member of the #RedBlackWhite family as Matthew and his wife Kirsten have one College son already here and another joining us soon.

We are confident that you will join us in extending our gratitude to Matthew for all he has given to our boys and staff over the past two decades. We are confident that he will continue to lead with passion and innovation, and we look forward to collaborating even closer with GHS going forward.
