The Newsroom: A New Voice at Maritzburg College

By Quaid Heyns

Maritzburg College has a reputation of being a place where ideas are shared and stories are told. On the 10 September 2025, the writing of the next chapter in that tradition will start with the establishment of The Newsroom, the official student-run news platform.

Spearheaded by fourth student and newly appointed Editor-in-Chief, Quaid Heyns, The Newsroom brings together a team of twelve enthusiastic young men with a shared vision: to inform, engage, and inspire the College community. Supporting them in this journey are three staff advisors, Mrs Sally Upfold, Mr Sean Eva and Miss Samantha Campbell, who will guide the team through its launch and will act as mentors as the project grows.

What makes The Newsroom stand out is its ambition? While it begins as a traditional student newspaper, the vision exceeds that description. The platform is set to expand into podcasts, live broadcasts, and even radio, guaranteeing that the voices of the boys of College reach a larger audience in new and innovative ways.

At its core, The Newsroom is centred on its dedication to the truth. The team aspires to report on major school events, celebrate student achievements and even offer thoughtful commentary all to steer the pubic into a brighter, more informed future by providing factual, balanced, and engaging content. The platform will be a space where integrity comes first.

“This isn’t just about news,” says Editor-in-Chief Quaid Heyns. “We aim to create a future where we can all grow together, connecting and reflecting over current events.”

The maiden publication serves as a declaration of the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey. With creativity, teamwork, and a dedication to the truth, The Newsroom is ready to set a sturdy foundation for the future of student media at Maritzburg College, and even the greater Maritzburg community.
