Providing top-quality education to boys from Form 2 to Form 6, we draw on our long and proud tradition, as well as our dynamic and forward-thinking ethos.
The Maritzburg College Choir, led by Mr. Thabang Tshale alongside Mr. Jacques Heyns and accompanied by the Head of Music at Maritzburg College, Mr. David Solomon, once again brought pride to their school as they travelled to Pretoria to compete in the prestigious ATKV Applous Choir Competition finals, held over the weekend of 31 August.
The journey began bright and early on Thursday morning, as the choir departed Pietermaritzburg to join six other top-performing choirs from across South Africa and even as far as Windhoek, Namibia. They resided at the Road Lodge in Centurion, which became their base throughout the weekend, where they enjoyed meals and took some well-deserved rest.
On Saturday morning, the choir enjoyed an enriching outing to the University of Pretoria, where they toured the campus and explored their science centre. There, the boys interacted with various educational exhibits and models, giving the boys an academic experience and insight to their possible futures in addition to their musical weekend.
That evening, the highly anticipated final round of the ATKV Applous competition was held at the UNISA campus. With all the finest choirs of the competition gathered in one place, the stage was set for a night of meritorious musical exhibitions.
The choir showcased their emotional and impactful repertoire, opening with a profound rendition of “Mag die pad jou weer lei”, followed by the popular “’n Blinkvos perd”, the lively gospel number “Hold on to the Rock”, and closing with the emotive “Ndikhokhele Bawo”. Their passionate performance captivated the audience, other choirs and judges alike, as well as earned praises after their performance by Franco Prinsloo, the composer of ‘Mag die pad jou weer lei’
The fruits of their labour included an astounding 86.41%, securing them a gold certificate; second place overall, being narrowly outdone by only 0.24% and a special accolade for Best Afrikaans Song in the tournament, a testament to the choir’s versatility and vocal strength.
This accomplishment marks another major milestone for the Maritzburg College Choir, who continue to uphold their reputation as one of the country’s finest school choirs.
