Sports Overview: March 2026

March Sporting Highlights
March was a month of spirited competition for Maritzburg College, with our boys excelling across multiple codes including athletics, hockey, rugby, squash, swimming, cycling, golf, volleyball and canoeing. Despite being early in the winter season, we witnessed impressive performances, positive development, and proud representation at provincial and national levels.

 

ATHLETICS

At the KZN Championships, three College athletes produced excellent results:

  • B. MhlongoGold (U19 100m) and Bronze (U19 200m).
  • S. Ismail – 4th (U17 800m).
  • L. Makhoba – 7th (U17 3000m).

 

GOLF

In fixtures against Hilton:

  • 1st Team won convincingly 5–1,
  • 2nd Team narrowly lost 2–4.

 

CYCLING

At the provincial XCO event:

  • K. SearleSilver (Junior Men)
  • B. Fourie – 4th
  • C. Wood – 8th

SQUASH

College’s 1st Team recorded a dominant 10–0 victory against Glenwood.

 

 

SWIMMING

At the Top Ten Gala, College finished 4th, just three points behind 3rd place.

 

 

HOCKEY

Clifton, Howick & St Charles (13–14 March)

College produced 11 wins, 1 draw and 0 losses across fixtures against Clifton, with strong additional results vs Howick and St Charles.

 

Notable performances:

  • 1st XI – 2–2 draw (Clifton)
  • 2nd XI, 3rd XI, 4th XI – all victories (3–0, 3–0, 4–0)

 

Westville (20–21 March)

  • 1st XI secured an excellent 3–1 victory, overturning a 1–0 halftime deficit.
  • Across the 15 fixtures: 4 wins, 3 draws, 8 losses.
  • A total of 23 goals scored, 34 conceded.

 

RUGBY

Helpmekaar & Other Schools (13–14 March)

A large pre-season programme saw 28 College teams play against Helpmekaar and other schools (Kearsney, Howick High, Westville, Edendale Technical and Phayiphini High).

Vs Westville (20–21 March)

  • Strong wins for the 4th XV (40–0), 6th XV (42–0), and several other junior sides.
  • 1st XV put in a competitive performance but lost 10–26 in challenging wet conditions.

 

WATER POLO

Four boys attended SA U16 trials:

  • A. Ash, C. Mackay-Leslie, C. van der Merwe, C. Barnard
  • Mackay-Leslie and Barnard finished in the winning team.

 

VOLLEYBALL

At the pre-season Tournament:

  • The 1st Team earned strong 2–0 group-stage wins and finished 3rd overall out of nine teams.

 

 

CANOEING

Ocean Racing Inter-Schools – Durban (21 March)

 

 

Overall Summary

March was characterised by:

  • Excellent individual achievements in athletics, cycling, swimming and canoeing
  • Dominant hockey performances (especially vs Clifton)
  • Strong junior rugby results and useful senior preparation
  • National-level representation and staff coaching honours
  • Continued depth across the sporting programme

The month provided a strong platform heading into the winter fixtures and upcoming festivals.
