Counselling and Career Guidance

Counselling at Maritzburg College

Being a teenager can be challenging at times. At College, boys have access to a full-time psychologist who is always available to address any issues they are facing with care and specialist skill. The aim of the counsellor is to be approachable. Boys who are experiencing difficulties at home or at school always have a place to go to talk about what’s happening and devise the best way forward.

The school psychologist is at the apex of the life skills education boys receive at Maritzburg College. This service complements and supports the lessons learned in Life Orientation classes and assists in career guidance, which can be a confusing and daunting time for some learners. No matter your needs, no matter your concerns, you always have support from the counselling team at College.

Career Guidance at Maritzburg College

Every boy at College is given the tools to plan his future career. From establishing a strong academic foundation to laying the groundwork for his professional life, we work on today to make a success of the future.

At College, we aim to give every boy every opportunity to excel – both now and in the years to come. Every boy has access to our full-time guidance counsellor, who fulfils a twofold role at the school. This key staff member is instrumental in providing professional advice on subject choices and is on-hand to work with boys on their plans for life beyond College’s walls.

Our career guidance counsellor guides Form 3 boys in their final subject choice selections. This is decided through one-on-one and group sessions that take career aspirations and academic performance into account.

Subject choice evenings give boys and their parents a chance to find out more about their potential subjects.

Form 5 and 6 boys are assisted with university applications and College works to create awareness around the application processes and various options available to the boys.

For boys who aim to build their careers overseas, College has well-established links with international tertiary entities.

College hosts an annual careers evening, with stands hosted by local businesses representing many different professions.

As part of the career guidance process, Fifth Formers go on a week of work experience in their field of interest – a day in the life of their future selves.

Boys sit the National Senior Certificate exams – the gateway for further study. Read more about NSC here.

The College community supports future careers. These opportunities are available through College Connect and the College community at large, who prepares and supports careers through its network.
