Performing Arts at Maritzburg College is a diverse programme catering for the needs of the creative boy. From singing, acting, and dancing to playing a musical instrument, the boys have every opportunity to grace the stages of the school.
House music is one of the first ways every boy at College will perform. In our annual inter-house music and performance competition, every house has to prepare three numbers to perform: a Soloist, Band, and a House Performance piece.
The school’s annual production is a highlight of the school’s calendar. In recent years, College has performed a major production every year and created many opportunities to grace the Olivier Cultural Centre stage.
The aim of the College Performing Arts programme is for boys to perform in at least one big play, musical, or revue each year. Working with the local girls’ schools, the shows are always a social occasion and help to build self-confidence in the boys. The students get involved in all aspects of these shows – from onstage to backstage. One of the goals is to make the shows as learner-driven as possible, placing the responsibility and success of these productions squarely in their hands. The College boys always live up to the occasion and, from small sketches to full productions, have produced work of the highest calibre.
