Mr Gilbert de Villiers joined Maritzburg College in January 2026 as Deputy Headmaster: Co-curricular, bringing with him extensive experience in boys’ education from leading South African schools.
Before arriving at College, Gilbert taught at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Pretoria Boys High School, Jeppe High School for Boys and most recently St John’s College. During this time, he served in a variety of roles including English teacher, Boarding and Day Housemaster, and 1st XI coach of both hockey and cricket.
In addition to teaching English at College, Gilbert oversees the full Co-curricular programme, ensuring that the wide offering of sport, culture and music continues to provide meaningful opportunities for every boy to participate, grow and excel.
Gilbert is committed to providing each and every boy with a platform to participate and achieve across the Co-curricular space. He is driven to ensure that Maritzburg College remains a school of choice in KwaZulu-Natal and the country when it comes to both participation and excellence beyond the classroom.
He is married to Claire and they have a daughter, Emily.
