Sporting Results: 15-16 October

Over the weekend, College’s teams took part in cricket, basketball and waterpolo fixtures, in the main against Northwood.  Our water polo teams also took part in the Top 10 tournament. For many of our boys these have been the first fixtures of this season, and provided good experience and learning opportunities.

Waterpolo

Mr Darren Sherriff, Director of Aquatics

The 1st water polo team participated in the Top 10 water polo tournament this weekend. It was a tough event with some good opposition. Westville and DHS who were in our pool, were eventual finalists in the tournament. With some good passages of play in most of the games, it was disappointing in the close games that could have been victories. The results are as follows:

Basketball

Ms Zinhle Cele, College Basketball

This past weekend, Maritzburg College travelled to Northwood to play for the first time on their newly built courts. The additional playing ground meant that the games went fairly quickly, and the day’s fixtures were done by lunchtime. It also made it considerably easier to observe social distancing and hold a successful, Covid-compliant fixture. The day started with the younger teams who hit the ground running with high energy games and victories all around. With a few of our u15A boys shocking onlookers with accuracy and skill well past their years.

The day ended with a nail-biter between the two first teams. The game was incredibly physical and for the most part, evenly matched. Northwood managed to snatch and build a lead in the second quarter, starting the third with more than a 10 point lead. After a quick team talk and a strategy briefing, the team was back in the game with a vengeance, quickly lessening the gap between the two scores. Between the wise words of Mbonambi and the infectious energy and never-say-die spirit of Shongwe, the boys walked off the court with pride despite a narrow 4 point loss in the end. The coaching staff are confident that the team will only improve more as their practice time increases and they build on their already strong chemistry.
