THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK :
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” –  Benjamin Franklin

As you continue with your exams, I thought I would share the following brief thoughts to hopefully assist you, as you come to terms with the examination papers and strive to be the best that you can be.

Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn,” stresses the importance of active and collaborative learning. This can be done by working with a tutor, peer and or teacher. The following key points can be highlighted:

Engagement and Participation: The quote underscores the idea that mere ‘telling’ and even formal teaching is not be as effective as involving you directly in the learning process. For exam preparation, you often benefit more when you engage with the material actively, such as through discussions or problem-solving exercises.

Experiential Learning: Is where you gain knowledge through direct experiences. This approach can be especially valuable for exam preparation, as it helps you understand concepts in a practical context, making it easier for you to recall and apply the information during the exams.

Critical Thinking: Instead of simply memorizing information for exams, you are encouraged to analyze, question, and understand the underlying principles. This approach not only aids in exam success, but also engenders a deeper understanding that can be beneficial beyond the exam setting.

Long-term Retention: If you actively engage with the material, you are more likely to remember and apply the knowledge not only during exams, but also in future academic and real-world scenarios.

Application of Knowledge: Learning is not just about passing exams; it’s about acquiring skills and knowledge that can be applied in various contexts.

In conclusion, Benjamin Franklin’s quote emphasizes the value of active involvement in the learning process, highlighting that true understanding and learning occur when you are engaged and participate actively. This perspective is highly relevant to you at school, when preparing for exams, as it encourages a deeper, more meaningful approach to learning that extends beyond exam success to lifelong skills and understanding.
