Welcome to new staff and students

The new year brings with it new staff and boys. We have 245 new 2nd formers and  40 new other boys through the forms, which takes our overall total to 1271 boys. A warm welcome back to everyone. I trust that you have all managed to have a well deserved holiday and that your families and friends are in good health.

 

NEW STAFF

We welcome several new staff to the College family this year.

  • Mr Brent Dodd returns from Zimbabwe to assume the role of Housemaster of Commons House, teacher of LO and Art and assist with the art club.
  • Mr Rory Bremner [OC ] returns to his alma mater after a sojourn in UK where he met his wife Amy to assume the role of Head of Phys Ed and teach Phys Ed and LO.. He will be a mentor in Forder House and duty master in Shepstone House, as well as coaching cricket and rugby.
  • Mrs Bronwyn Mantle returns to College from St Johns to teach Afrikaans. Mrs Mantle is a very experienced educator who will be a mentor in Forder House
  • Mrs Reshmika Budhoo, a very experienced English teacher, joins us on transfer from Carter High and will be a mentor in Fuller House.
  • Mr Simeon Goddard [OC 2014] also returns to his alma mater after completing his studies and a short stint at Michaelhouse, to teach English and will be a mentor in Barns House and coach basketball, rugby and music.
  • Mr Sean Eva joins us from Gauteng in the role of Afrikaans and LO teacher and will be a mentor in Forder House and a BE master in Shepstone House as well as coaching athletics.
  • Mr Darren Joshua joins us from TWC to teach Geography, initially as locum for Mr Sutherland who is on medical leave. He will be a mentor and coach basketball, hockey and soccer.
  • Ms Lindy Mkhize continues in the role of IsiZulu teacher and as a LO locum for Mrs Dasrathlall who is on maternity leave.
  • Ms Caitlin Mudely continues as a Technology locum for Mrs Dasrathall
  • Ms Samantha Campbell has been appointed as the marketing assistant.
  • Mr Sameeth Soorju joins College as EO Mathematics Intern.

F2 BOARDERS RETURN
Thank you to Mr Emerson, Mr Barbour, Ms Cilliers and the BE staff and prefects, the SAN Ladies and Admission ladies, as well as Granny Macs and her staff, for ensuring smooth transition for our new F2 boys and a wonderful welcome for their parents. Thank you also to Mr Kajee and the prefects for their assistance – we have already received very positive feedback.

F2 BORVER WEEK
The Form 2 Orientation Week and Good Man Journey commenced on Sunday. Many thanks to Mr Bam and the Spirit of Adventure team, Mr Sparrow, Mr Tyler, Mr Kajee and all the staff and prefects who are assisted at Tala over the last 24 hours. The event was a huge success as part of their introduction to College during which every boy successfully completed his rite of passage activities. We will ensure that this week goes well as well and ensure the 2nd formers have a smooth transition into College. It is the responsibility of all mentors, housemasters and educators who teach and coach these young men.

 

HOLIDAY NEWS
NSC MARKING
In December College was, as usual, a NSC Marking Centre. Thank you to Mr Kyle Emerson, Mrs Reshmee and her team, Mr Shaun Crosson and his team, Mr Thingo Tshabalala and Mr Vishal Rajpaul for running a very successful marking centre. I have received many thanks and congratulations regarding the very high standard of everything which has become a  hallmark of we do things at College. Well done!

 

ESTATES WORK
A huge debt of gratitude to Mrs Elliot and Mr Hackland and their amazing Estates Team, who have been kept extremely busy over the holiday period doing maintenance and preparing staff houses for all the new and moving staff.

National Weeks
Under 19
Brokensha and C. Thomas represented the KwaZulu Natal Inland U19 team at the National week. Thomas performed well opening the batting with scores of 61 against Free State and 50 against the Titans. The team finished the week in 4th place.

Under 16
Dzanibe, D. Nadasan and D. Naidoo represented the KwaZulu Natal Inland U16 team at the National week. Dzanibe performed well winning the man of the match award against Boland with bowling figures of 3 for 17 in 10 overs. The team played in the 3rd / 4th playoff match but the match was unfortunately cancelled due to rain.

DEBATING
UKZN SDC 2023 Debating results:
After 3 days of debating, the College senior team made it to semi-finals. Unfortunately they were knocked out; however the following awards were earned in the tournament:

  1. D Gademan (2 best speakers)
  2. A Mhlanzi (best speaker)
  3. L Naicker (best speaker)
  4. K Moodley (best speaker)
  5. MH Moosa (3 best speaker)

B Zakwe – junior novice award
Senior Rankings – Top 10: 3rd – MH Moosa
A special lifetime award for contribution to KZN and PMBDL, was awarded to Ms Avershree Maistry

 National debating 2023 Results:
Three College debaters represented KZN at the annual National Schools Debating Championship (December 2023).

  • A Mhlanzi and K Moodley were on the junior KZN team that claimed 3rd place.
  • MH Moosa’s team made it to semi-finals.
  • MH Moosa selected for second year the National team representing South Africa in 2024.

  • Cricket: Dzanibe – Man of the Match award for KZN Inland v Boland with bowling figures of 3-17 in 10 overs.
  • Debating: MH Moosa selected for second year the National team representing South Africa in 2024.
  • Table Tennis: T Royappen won Silver in Top Schools’ National Summer Games. The KZN u18 boys reached the final and lost narrowly to W Cape. Wonderful effort.
  • Tennis: St Stithian’s Festival – Outstanding performance T Smith
