Assembly 26 February – Theme: GROWTH MINDSET

ASSEMBLY: THEME OF GROWTH MINDSET

From Scripture

‘ So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Continue to live in him.” – Colossians 2:6-7 –

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who live in me while I live in them will produce a lot of fruit. But you cannot produce anything without me .” – John 15: 5

A Prayer

Dear Lord, we thank you for all you’ve done for us. We pray that you will guide our hearts and help us to grow into the person you want us to be. In your name we prayer, Amen.

Theme: Having a growth mind set

Thought for the Week: “Whatever makes you uncomfortable is your biggest opportunity for growth.” –  Bryant H McGill

What does it mean to have a growth mindset?

  • A belief that one can improve one’s intelligence, ability and performance versus a fixed mindset [Dweck 2015]

How can this be encouraged?

  • Ask yourself. Is the effort today worth the reward tomorrow?
  • Focus on your OWN performance NOT on others
  • Take action rather than question e.g. What can I do better?

Who can I ask for help? Your teachers –they will guide you.

  • Praise effort rather than intelligence
  • Encourage reflection on effort and performance
  • Encourage risk taking and challenges
  • Accept that setbacks are part of the process
  • Encourage collaboration and time to rise to challenges
  • Be open and accepting of criticism but give criticism constructively
  • Be open to learning from others e.g. peer-on-peer learning
  • Encourage questions such as ‘Have I improved? Have I learnt anything?

ACADEMIC TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Last week we had the annual NSC Academic Awards Ceremony and a number of our staff were acknowledged for excellence in teaching. A total of 49 academic staff are congratulated in ensuring they achieved a 100% pass rate which is no mean feat .They will all receive a certificate and small gift of appreciation.

END OF SUMMER SPORT SEASON

Over the past seven weeks you have heard a number of names of boys who have excelled in the sports and cultural arena in a various codes. These boys have all had to work very hard to achieve the success that they have and their coaches have also spent considerable time assisting them in reaching their sporting goals. Collectively they have shown incredible passion and commitment to getting there. It is important that as we approach the end of the summer sports programme that you acknowledge your coaches, managers, and parents who have supported you and encouraged you all the way. Please do so over the next week or so.

Over the past week, our athletes, golfers, 1st XI cricketers, basketballers , cyclists, chess players, and canoeists have all excelled. Whilst we recognise the top performers, all of you need to strive to meet your commitments regarding sports practices and matches, and to always give of your best in all that you do – that is what College is renowned for. College boys never give up and are totally committed. This week sees our final summer fixture vs Kearsney College – Let’s give 100% commitment in seeing our summer commitments through to the end .

I want to thank all the boys who have practiced and trained diligently and the coaches for their efforts keeping their players focussed through the summer months.

From next week, we move into our winter programme and we expect the same commitment to all these activities. You must attend all practices and matches and give nothing but your best. If you are dropped form a team or don’t make the team you think you should be in, DON’T GIVE UP. Remain committed to show the coaches they may have made an error of judgement – and hopefully you are promoted or reinstated.

I wish you all a very good week.
