2024 Sport and Culture Excellence Awards

Celebrating Sporting and Cultural Excellence at Maritzburg College

Last night Maritzburg College paid tribute to the school’s top sport and cultural achievers for 2024 at the annual Sports and Cultural Awards Ceremony held in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall. The event provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the year’s outstanding performances across the school’s large and diverse range of sport and cultural codes.  With 337 Old Collegians who have played at an international level, more than any other school in South Africa, College has a proud history of sporting excellence.

While focusing on key highlights of the year, College’s headmaster, Dr Chris Luman, described the strength of the collective spirit of College, and the unifying impact of sport and culture in breaking barriers, bringing together boys from diverse backgrounds, and forming bonds that last a lifetime.

College was very proud to welcome Ms Deshun Deysel, one of South Africa’s leading female high-altitude mountaineers and sports ambassador, as the guest speaker at the ceremony. Ms Deysel shared some of her personal climbing journeys, as well her definition of a winning attitude; a clear vision, making it real, personal and inspirational, showing commitment, and having fun!

A standout winner on the night was Jonathan Gasarasi, who was awarded the Robertson Trophy for Outstanding Service to the Audio-Visual Society, the ‘Slow’ Ngcobo Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Basketball, as well as the Olivier Trophy for Sport and Culture.   Other top awardees included the 1st basketball team who received the Headmaster’s Award for the Highlight of the Year, the Graham Holder Trophy for the Best Overall Contribution to Culture at College recipient, Cebelihle Zondi, and the Headmaster’s Award for the Sportsman of the Year joint winners, Phiwayinkosi Kubheka and Ricky Lottering. Talented cyclist, Luke Newlands, received the Headmaster’s Award for the Best All-Round Sportsman.

Well done to all our prize winners for 2024!
