This picture has held quite some importance for College in recent years – not because it showcases standout leaders, elite sportsmen, or top scholars, but rather a handful of broers, ill-acquainted with the workings of the school, wearing shoes two sizes too big and bashers untouched by long sunny afternoons on Goldstones. These boys are the ones who greet prospective College parents as they consider where to send their sons for the final leg of their schooling journey.
The photo was taken in 2021, and through four long years – filled with the gruelling ritual known as team-testing, launching bashers skyward at every try scored, and savouring the legendary Zarm whenever the opportunity arose – these five boys have risen through the ranks of Maritzburg College. Along the way, they’ve embellished their blazers with hard-fought achievements and grown to become the leaders who now stand at the helm of the school.

It’s fascinating to see how much has changed at College, but also how much remains the same. That spirit of camaraderie and the pursuit of excellence, even in the face of vastly different technologies and social landscapes, seems to be a constant. Makes me proud to be associated with the school.
