College Ceremonial Colours

OC (1975) Drum Major Denzil Bazley has been working to upgrade the flag that was introduced during last year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony. A College flag was upgraded to a proper Colour Flag. This included adding a fringe around the flag and red, black and white tassels. A new flagpole, or more correctly, pike has been constructed. It is stained, has brass fittings, a rope-wrap for ease of grip for the colour bearer, and is finished with a beautiful College crest.

This was cast in brass like “forged in fire”. It was cast from a number of old South Africa 1-cent pieces. Drum Major Bazley cast the brass and machined the components in his own home workshop. His interest in crafts was inspired during his years at College when woodwork and other crafts were encouraged.

The finial is a work of art, showing the crossed assegai and carbine, together with a beautifully crafted torse and scroll. Meticulous attention was even paid to the ferrule. Drum Major Bazley commented, “It’s reminiscent of the Roman standards; we call it a pike. College will have its own ceremonial Colours for Remembrance Day and the Remembrance Service on Founders Day. There may be other opportunities to use the Colours.”

The protocol for the Remembrance Day Ceremony will be:
– The College Colours will be laid at the commencement of the service.
– The two College boys who lower the flags during the service will also place the two drums, which represent an altar, upon which the Colours will be laid.
– Drum Major Bazley will lay the Colours to the accompaniment of a piper.
