College vs DHS
Hockey
College played 16 hockey matches this weekend winning 10, drawing 3 and losing 3 in a very good first round of fixtures to start of the winter sport season. Nine of the games were against DHS, and our RedArmy secured a convincing 5-0 victory.
1st XI match report: Kyle Emerson, 1st XI coach
The first match of the regular season saw the College 1st XI travel down to Riverside to play DHS. This would be the second of three fixtures scheduled for the 2021 season. College won the first match 3-1 during the KZN Festival and arrived in Durban confident but under no allusion that the result would be a sure thing.
College started the match with good energy and pressed DHS high in the field to put them under pressure which resulted in many chances to attack the circle in the first half. Callum Osborne earned College their first penalty corner of the match in the sixth minute after he entered the circle and rolled it onto a DHS foot. Ayakha Mthalane got on the end of a well-worked penalty corner which gave College an early lead. College would continue to dominate both territory and possession and created two great chances which saw College strikers diving to get a tap in, but both were narrowly missed on the far post. In the fourth minute of the second quarter, Osborne again found himself entering the right side of the circle and after a scuffle in the circle College were awarded a penalty corner. Mthalane would tap in his second goal after another penalty corner variation. The College team’s tails were up and with the very next attack they would earn another penalty corner as Jaderiane Jansen beat a defender in the circle and forced a bad tackle. Osborne made no mistake with his drag-flick and found the side netting. Another penalty corner just before half time was narrowly missed as the ball rolled past the post. College went into half-time 3-0 up.
With the very first phase of the second half, College moved the ball well and an accurate ball from Carrick McKean from his own half found Thomas Conolly on the edge of the circle, but he was badly fouled in the circle. College earned a penalty corner from this but were unlucky not to have been awarded a stroke. College were unable to score the resulting penalty corner. A few minutes later a College defender made a bad tackle inside the circle and was given a 5-minute yellow card. This meant that DHS were able to gain some momentum and put College under pressure. They made their numerical advantage count as they searched for their first goal and created a few circle entries but they were unable to get any on target and trouble the College goalkeeper. As DHS searched for a goal they left themselves vulnerable at the back and College scored a great counter attack goal which Jansen finished from the top of the circle. College would score their fifth goal a few minutes from full time with another counter-attack goal as Conolly entered the circle, rolled the ball to Alex Styan who made a diving pass to give the ball to Ross Crookes who tapped in on the far post.
A dominant performance from College who now look forward to welcoming DHS to Pape’s later in the term.

Rugby
College and DHS met on the rugby field for the first time in 1910, and over the years two schools very similar in character and size have battled it out on the sports field in a number of epic encounters. The longest winning period for College was from 1981 to 1989 when College won 15 games in a row. The late Skonk Nicholson had a close affiliation with both schools and the 1st XV teams of the two schools fight for the honour of the Skonk Nicholson Cup, a trophy kindly and generously donated by DHS. This year, College was proud to win the trophy emerging victorious 34-10.
Overall this weekend, College played 20 games against DHS, winning 18 and losing just 2. With 27 rugby teams taking to the field, we also had a few games against other schools, recording 21 victories and 6 losses.
1st XV match report: Cameron Fraser, 1st XV coach
On Saturday 8 May, after a long awaited return to schoolboy rugby, the Maritzburg College 1st XV took on Durban High School in their 1st round of regular local fixtures.
College dominated territorial stats in the early stages of the 1st half and after a well-executed backline strike, Spha Ngcobo secured a five pointer under the poles for the Red Black and White. Shortly thereafter, our boys managed to string together a number of phases, which eventually resulted in a penalty. A successful lineout saw College set up a maul to ultimately cross the line for another five pointer. Later in the games, College once again looked threatening but fortune favoured DHS in this instance, and they intercepted the ball scoring a try against the run of play which left the half-time score at 10-7 to College.
In the middle of the 2nd half, AJ Knoetze crashed over the line for College after another incisive break from Liam Prinsloo off a dominant scrum. Liam Prinsloo converted the try successfully. The final score was 34-10 to College, and our 1st XV were thrilled to secure the Skonk Nicholson trophy.
